Microclimate Response: A direct south exposure and white marble surroundings demand that plantings perform well in heat and glare. Native species are included. Design Approach: The landscape design provides a rich visual backdrop for State functions while upholding the project’s rigorous performance criteria. Bright arcs of roses echo architectural features and set outdoor focal points for interior spaces. Trees modulate linear corridors, forming a series of outdoor rooms. The design clusters plantings in contrasting groups of color, form and texture. Maintenance
as a Design Parameter: Working
closely with Facilities staff, plantings are screened for pest and disease
resistance. Trees include specially detailed barriers to eliminate root
damage to planter waterproofing membrane. Drip irrigation assures
water efficient application and eliminates mist damage to building surfaces
and windows. The layout provides practical access for maintenance
throughout.
Owner: State of Oregon Project Role: In conjunction with planter waterproofing and canopy renovations by the Architect, we provided design development, contract documents and construction observation services for landscape and irrigation for approximately 14,500 sf of on-structure planters. Construction
Cost: $250,000 estimated
